Hidden inland from the coast of the Costa Tropical de Granada and the busier towns of Motril, Salobreña and Almuñécar, is the beautiful valley of Los Guájares, where the River Toba winds its way through the mountains to join the Guadalfeo, on its way to the sea. The Moors, who lived here for over 700 years, called Los Guájares an "oasis between the mountains" and the village of Guájar Alto "paradise on earth". Guájar Alto is an authentic Spanish village, offering traditional hospitality and a warm welcome to visitors. The village has 3 bars, a well stocked village shop, and benefits from daily bread and fresh fish deliveries. Every Wednesday the church square hosts a small market with a variety of goods on offer, ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to shoes, clothing and household items.
I moved to Guájar Alto in 2005 when I bought a country property which I restored. I run a property consultancy, with a specific focus on property for sale in Los Guájares and Salobreña; I have access to a wide range of property for sale to suit all budgets and requirements, many of which are not advertised locally. These include village houses, cortijos, villas with pools and plots of land.
As well as Guájar Alto there are two other villages in the Los Guájares valley, Guájar Fondón and Guájar Faragüit; a short drive inland will take you to the Lecrín Valley and the mountain villages of Las Alpujarras. The coast, known as the Costa Tropical de Granada, is only half an hour’s drive away. Here you will find the resorts of Salobreña and Almuñécar, and the larger town of Motril. The city of Granada is approximately an hour’s drive away.
